Equipment

  • Medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid
  • Fine-Mesh Sieve
  • Wooden Spoon or Spatula

Ingredients

Basmati Rice

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1.5 cups water or light vegetable/chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2-3 whole cardamom pods
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  • Rinse the basmati rice in a fine-mesh sieve under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and ensures the rice remains fluffy.
  • Soak the rinsed rice in cold water for 20-30 minutes. Drain well before cooking.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the drained rice and toast for 3-4 minutes until the rice is lightly golden and fragrant.
  • Add the cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and bay leaf to the pan. Stir to combine and release the spices' aromas.
  • Pour in the water or broth and add salt. Stir once and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and remove the whole spices before serving.

Notes

Ensure that the rice is thoroughly rinsed to remove excess starch, which is key to achieving fluffy, non-sticky rice. Soaking the rice is crucial for even cooking and achieving the desired texture. Adjust the amount of salt based on the saltiness of the broth used, if opting for broth instead of water. The resting period after cooking allows the rice to absorb any remaining moisture, resulting in perfectly cooked grains.
